Russia Intensifies Technology Espionage Amidst Western Sanctions
European officials say fake firms, middlemen and hackers are helping Russia seek advanced machine tools, defense technology and research under sanctions pressure.
On Wednesday, Anne Keast-Butler, the director of the British signals intelligence agency, accused Russia of "relentlessly targeting" European allies to steal technology and plot sabotage and assassination attempts.
Four years of international sanctions have hampered Moscow's ability to procure European technology, while the grinding war in Ukraine has taxed key industries and pushed the country toward a potential financial crisis.
Christoffer Wedelin, deputy head of operations at the Swedish Security Service, said Russia is "putting serious effort" into acquiring advanced machine tools and factory equipment, including technology for the Gripen fighter jet.
Russian officials planned a budget deficit of 3.7 trillion rubles for 2026, reaching about 3.4 trillion rubles by Feb, as Kaupo Rosin of Estonia's Foreign Intelligence Service said the narrative of "total victory" has vanished.
Warning that it is "very dangerous" to analyze Russia like a Western country, Juha Martelius, director of Finland's Security and Intelligence Service, noted President Vladimir Putin faces mounting economic concerns that may trigger a crisis.
