Russian liberal politician jailed for 4 years over donation to Navalny group
TASS said she was the third Yabloko member jailed in less than four months as authorities intensified pressure on the opposition party.
- On Thursday, Elena Perepelitsa, a member of Russia's liberal Yabloko party opposing the war in Ukraine, was sentenced to four years in a penal colony for donating money to an extremist organization.
- Authorities convicted Perepelitsa of donating money to the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, which Russia designates as a "foreign agent" and outlawed extremist organization.
- Two other Yabloko members faced sentencing in less than four months: deputy chairman Lev Shlosberg received over 11 years in August for discrediting Russia's armed forces, while deputy leader Maxim Kruglov was jailed for seven years in June.
- Yabloko confirmed the verdict on Telegram, sharing Perepelitsa's statement denying she knowingly financed extremist activity, as the party faces continued pressure after being barred from September's parliamentary elections.
- Since Ukraine's full-scale war began in 2022, Russia has employed extremist designations and strict wartime censorship laws to prosecute dissenters, prompting many opposition figures and activists to flee the country.
