On 5 July 2014, Kramatorsk and Slovensk were liberated by Ukrainian troops from the illegal occupation of the separatist militias supported by Moscow. Eleven years to the day after this anniversary, the large-scale Russian invasion destroyed the hope of lasting peace in the region, and made the spectre of a new occupation on a daily basis, in one of the last large free cities, with Slovensk, of the Donetsk region.
