Russian anti-war politician Nadezhdin says he has been detained
Law enforcement said the anti-war politician may face charges over an extremist symbol as he presses ahead with a State Duma campaign.
- On Monday, anti-war politician Boris Nadezhdin was detained by police north of Moscow, writing on Telegram that he was being taken to a police station in Dolgoprudny, located about 12 miles from the capital.
- Russia's Justice Ministry designated Nadezhdin a "foreign agent" last Friday, a legal status that bars individuals from seeking elected office and has been widely used against critics of the Kremlin.
- For the State Duma elections this September, Nadezhdin is campaigning on a platform advocating for a "return to normal life," while his team collects signatures to qualify for the ballot.
- Russian media cited Nadezhdin's lawyer stating the politician faces charges for displaying an extremist symbol, though it remains unclear which specific symbol prompted the action; law enforcement authorities have not commented on the arrest.
- Despite risks of disqualification, Nadezhdin vowed to press forward with his signature collection drive, having previously attempted to run against President Vladimir Putin in the 2024 presidential election before being blocked by electoral commission officials.
