Russia says local truce established to enable repairs at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant
The truce allows restoration of a crucial 330-kilovolt backup line at Europe’s largest nuclear plant to maintain safety, IAEA said on Feb. 27.
- Russian officials reported a local ceasefire took effect near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant on Feb 27 to enable repairs to an external power line, with both sides pausing fighting while Ukraine offered no immediate comment.
- The facility, which houses six reactors, has been under Russian control since shortly after the start of the war in 2022.
- The International Atomic Energy Agency said a truce enabled restoration of the 330-kilovolt supply line, while Rafael Mariano Grossi, IAEA Director General, said `Demining activities are ongoing to ensure safe access for the repair teams` and Rosatom said specialists are monitoring repairs.
- Plant management said radiation levels are normal as repair work proceeds, but both sides have accused each other of staging attacks that raised the risk of a catastrophic accident.
- A similar truce last year allowed reliance on emergency diesel generators, Russian officials said one power line still works and repairs take at least a week, while control remains disputed in US-mediated peace talks in Geneva next month.
