- On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia hopes U.S.-mediated peace talks on ending the war in Ukraine will resume soon, following a phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Trump sent negotiators to Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend to relaunch the stalled process, while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested it may be possible to draw up a roadmap to restart talks.
- While Peskov confirmed there is "confirmed political will" to resume talks, a huge gulf remains between Russia and Ukraine regarding territory in the 4-1/2-year war.
- Peskov added that prisoner exchanges remain "a constant item on the agenda," noting Russia released American Robert Gilman at Trump's request last month.
- The two countries have traded prisoners several times in recent years; the largest deal in August 2024 released 16 people from Russian and Belarusian jails, including Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich.
