Russia Designates Stanford University as ‘Undesirable’
The designation could expose students and organizers to prison terms of up to six years under Russian law, officials and advocates said.
- Russia's Justice Ministry added Stanford University, its Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies , and the Crisis Simulation for Peace , a German non-profit, to its list of "undesirable" organizations on Friday.
- Russia introduced the "undesirable" law in 2015 to crack down on independent media, opposition groups, and foreign-funded organizations. Hundreds of entities are now blacklisted under this statute.
- Stanford is at least the 19th Western university or program labeled "undesirable" over the past five years. Yale University, Berkeley, and George Washington University have received the same designation previously.
- Designating an entity "undesirable" bars Russian universities from conducting joint research projects with it. Anyone affiliated with the institution faces potential criminal charges.
- Under Russian law, individuals affiliated with such entities face up to four years in prison, while organizers risk up to six years. The Liberty Forward estimates between 2,000 and 3,000 Russians could face legal risks.
