Russia accuses Ukraine of killing five civilians in drone strike on bus in border region

Five civilians, including a minor, were killed and 23 wounded when a drone struck a passenger bus in Russia's Belgorod region, officials reported.

  • On July 20, Ukraine's Security Service reported that operators from its Alpha Special Operations Center used 13 drones to strike a Russian Federal Security Service base in occupied Kherson Oblast, with all drones hitting the target and triggering a large fire.
  • The strike stems from a 40-day campaign Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced June 25 to increase pressure on Russia's military and economic infrastructure, following earlier strikes on shadow-fleet tankers in the Black Sea and oil depots in Russia's Stavropol Krai.
  • By the SBU's early assessment, around 100 servicemen may have been at the heavily fortified facility, which contained more than 70 vehicles and was protected by armed guards, checkpoints, and underground shelters; the reported personnel count has not been independently verified.
  • Video released by the SBU documents drones striking buildings and triggering explosions, as the agency said such operations inflict losses and force Russia to divert forces to guard its own sites, complicating FSB logistics and supply lines.
  • Daily strike operations by Ukrainian forces—including the Defense Ministry's military intelligence, Unmanned Systems Forces, and regular army—sustain pressure on Russian targets, with the SBU reporting on July 13 that it had struck Mangust-class patrol boats and fuel infrastructure across occupied Crimea.
