Russell to Take Grid Penalty in Singapore Due to Sepang Retirement
Mercedes will fit a fresh engine after his Sepang retirement, and the 10-place penalty could leave him starting from the rear, sources said.
George Russell is set to start Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix from the back of the grid after Mercedes confirmed a mandatory power unit change following his retirement from the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia last weekend.
Russell's retirement from third place in Sepang exhausted his allocation of four power units, forcing Mercedes' hand. The 28-year-old now faces a potential "double whammy" of penalties if the team introduces an upgraded engine later.
Mercedes had hoped to delay the penalty until introducing an upgrade under the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system. The Marina Bay Street Circuit is notoriously difficult for overtaking, complicating Russell's recovery this weekend.
Russell trails championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 84 points with only seven rounds remaining. The Mercedes driver conceded that hopes of a maiden title are now "exceptionally unlikely" following the recent DNF.
Teammate Antonelli overcame a similar grid penalty to win the Italian Grand Prix from 19th place last month. Russell will need a similarly miraculous performance to claw back points on the streets of Singapore this weekend.
