Davies Criticises BBC Boss for AI Doctor Who Comments
Davies said some writers use AI for first drafts and warned it could replace writers as another Doctor Who series is planned without him.
Television writer Russell T Davies criticized BBC Director-General Matt Brittin on Wednesday, calling his praise for an AI-generated Doctor Who episode "clumsy" during a BBC Radio 4 interview.
Brittin, who took over the BBC in May 2026, previously described an unofficial 50-minute AI-generated Doctor Who episode as "pretty good" at a Royal Television Society conference in September.
Davies, who does not use AI for scripts, warned the technology could replace writers, asking "What are you paid for otherwise? What are you there to do?" 30 words, one sentence, ends with period.
Addressing criticism at a staff meeting last week, Brittin clarified he was commenting on the "pace of change" while emphasizing human-led creativity remains central to the BBC's mission.
Davies also provided positive news for fans, promising production for a new Doctor Who series with a brand-new Doctor and companion will begin next summer.
