Rubio heads to Central Asia while other US officials hit foreign policy hot spots

Rubio is leading a delegation of more than 200 business executives as Washington seeks investment deals and stronger ties with Central Asia and India.

  • On Sunday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio travels to Uzbekistan to meet leaders from the C5+1 grouping connecting the United States with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
  • Trump hosted these regional leaders at the White House last November, when Kazakhstan agreed to join the Abraham Accords, solidifying prior engagement with the region.
  • More than 200 business executives will accompany Rubio to Uzbekistan, the State Department said. After Uzbekistan, he will visit Mumbai and Jamnagar, India, to meet Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani.
  • The trip occurs as the Iran war smolders, Saudi Arabia fights the Houthis, and a new rift opens in US-Ukraine relations. Rubio has not visited Kyiv or Moscow since becoming secretary of state.
  • While Rubio focuses on Central Asia and India, other officials manage different foreign policy hotspots. Vance represented the United States in Pakistan during peace talks with Iran in April.
