Flight delays in US to grow worse, transportation secretary warns
Air traffic controllers face record stress and staffing shortages due to a 26-day government shutdown, causing delays at major U.S. airports, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.
- On Sunday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo `They get a notice of what they're going to be paid on Tuesday, and they got a big fat zero. No paycheck is coming on Tuesday, and so I've been out talking to our air traffic controllers, and you can see the stress,' Duffy told host Maria Bartiromo in a 'Sunday Morning Futures' exclusive interview.
- Amid the prolonged government shutdown, air traffic controllers have worked without pay for weeks, straining operations and leaving federal staff unpaid.
- Duffy said `These are people that oftentimes live paycheck to paycheck, or one controller has a stay-at-home spouse`, while a temporary ground stop at Los Angeles International Airport was lifted after 10:30 a.m. and other major airports reported delays.
- Duffy warned safety is 'job number one' and officials will slow or stop traffic if controllers aren't focused, so travelers should expect delays throughout the week.
- Holiday travel may be affected, Duffy warned, and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said military personnel could miss paychecks by Nov. 15 if the shutdown continues.
