Floodwaters Threaten Quitman County Jail as Coldwater River Overflows in Marks

Summary
MARKS Miss.–The Quitman County jail is being threatened by floodwaters from the Coldwater River, said the emergency management director there. Flood stage for the river is about 39 ft., and this weekend the river reached 40 ft. at Marks, flooding farmland and overflowing a bayou behind the jail. County workers were able to construct a levee from sandbags, but the water overran the temporary levee. Another is being built to keep water from coming into the jail. It was unclear Sunday if a backup plan was being devised, should that levee prove ineffective.
