RSPCA Crucial Three-Step Warning to Protect Dogs in the Heat
The charity says 355 suspected heatstroke incidents were treated last year and warns that dogs can suffer fatal damage within 15 to 30 minutes.
The RSPCA warns that using damp towels to cool dogs must be done carefully, placing them beneath the dog rather than over the body to avoid trapping heat and worsening the condition.
Dogs with respiratory problems, thick coats, or extreme ages such as puppies and seniors are more vulnerable to heatstroke and require extra care from owners.
Signs of heatstroke include confusion, panting, drooling, rapid heart rate, weakness, muscle spasms, or collapse, and owners should act quickly to cool the dog before seeking veterinary help.
The RSPCA advises a three-step response to heatstroke: stop further heating, cool the dog immediately, and then transport it to a veterinarian, emphasizing 'cool first, transport second' to improve recovery chances.
