Royal Navy's new attack submarine arrives at Faslane
The 318ft submarine will undergo sea trials over the coming months before joining the Royal Navy’s operational fleet.
The Royal Navy's newest Astute-class submarine, HMS Agamemnon, arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde in Faslane, Scotland, after departing BAE systems in Barrow last week. Its arrival coincides with the 125th anniversary of Holland, the Royal Navy's first submarine.
As the sixth in the Navy's arsenal, the 318-foot hunter-killer vessel joins other Astute-class submarines including HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious, and Anson. These represent the Navy's most advanced and powerful attack submarines.
Commander John Gabb, the vessel's commanding officer, said, "It is an enormous privilege to be the first person to command this vessel at sea." The submarine carries tomahawk land-attack missiles capable of striking targets up to 30 miles away.
Rear Admiral Andy Perks described the arrival as a "significant milestone," crediting the "dedication, skill and collaboration" of thousands across the Defence Nuclear Enterprise. Performance testing will occur during sea trials over the coming months.
With a crew of about 100 submariners, HMS Agamemnon will soon join the operational fleet. Meanwhile, a seventh vessel, HMS Achilles, remains under construction as the Navy continues expanding its submarine capability.
