Royal Mint reveals the 10 rarest and most valuable 50p coins in circulation today
The Royal Mint says the Atlantic Salmon 50p has the lowest mintage at 200,000 coins, while Kew Gardens ranks second with 210,000.
The Royal Mint revealed the 10 rarest 50p coins currently in British circulation, with the 2023 Atlantic Salmon design holding the lowest mintage at 200,000.
Mintage figures determine the rarity of these pieces, which have seen more than 70 variations enter circulation since decimalisation in 1971.
Among the most sought-after, the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p ranks second with 210,000 minted and resale prices above £700, while 2011 London Olympic Games designs like Olympic Wrestling and Olympic Football also appear high.
Collectors also prize 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny coins, each with 1.4 million minted, though a coin's physical condition and minting errors significantly influence final market Valuations.
Measuring 27.5mm in diameter, the 50 pence piece remains the largest British coin in circulation, providing unique space for commemorative artwork.
