UK must protect against Russian 'hybrid attacks', ex-national security adviser says
The former national security adviser said ministers should increase practical aid and warn Britons more clearly as US support for Kyiv weakens.
Lord Peter Ricketts, former UK national security adviser, warned the government must better protect infrastructure against Russian "hybrid attacks," urging ministers to stop attempting to act as a "bridge" between Ukraine and Washington.
These attacks are becoming "more reckless, more dangerous," Ricketts warned, noting eventually "people are going to end up getting killed somewhere" and emphasizing increased defence spending and network resilience.
Speaking to BBC Radio, Lord Ricketts stated Russian President Vladimir Putin is attempting to "undermine morale in European countries" alongside his efforts in Ukraine, arguing the public needs conversation about risks.
Tensions between Ukraine and Washington have deteriorated, with President Donald Trump waiving further sanctions on Russia late Friday; The White House claimed the move served American "national interests" despite Trump previously endorsing tougher sanctions.
MI5 chief Sir Kevin McCallum noted threats from foreign states have quadrupled over the last decade, while Nato forces are scheduled for major military exercises in Poland next month to ensure security readiness.
