Ross Hodge named next WVU men's basketball head coach

  • West Virginia University announced Ross Hodge, the 44-year-old former North Texas head coach, as their new head men's basketball coach on Wednesday afternoon, replacing Darian DeVries, who left for Indiana after one season.
  • The coaching change was prompted by Darian DeVries's departure to coach at Indiana after Bob Huggins resigned after 16 years as head coach.
  • Hodge, who agreed to a five-year deal with WVU, led the Mean Green to a 46-23 record over the past two seasons, finishing second in the American Athletic Conference this season with a 27-8 record, and is currently coaching in the NIT.
  • Athletic Director Wren Baker, who previously worked with Hodge at North Texas, described him as a proven winner and leader, while Hodge stated, "It is with great honor and humility that I accept the head men's basketball coaching position at West Virginia University."
  • With several players out of eligibility or entering the transfer portal, including Jonathan Powell, K.J. Tenner, Sencire Harris, Amani Hansberry and Tucker DeVries, Hodge will likely be building a roster from scratch, although Abraham Oyeadier, Ofri Naveh and Jayden Stone are the only scholarship players remaining who have yet to announce their intentions for next season.
