Wyndham Clark Pulls Away for 5-Shot Lead at Bellerive over McIlroy and Cantlay
McIlroy shot a five-under 67 and said it will take a heroic effort to catch leader Wyndham Clark.
On Saturday, Wyndham Clark extended his lead at the BMW Championship to five shots, firing a 5-under 65 at Bellerive in St. Louis for his second five-shot advantage entering a final round this year.
After an early double bogey on the first hole, Clark capitalized on a hot streak, recording five birdies and an eagle over an eight-hole stretch that pulled him clear of the field.
Rory McIlroy climbed to 12 under with a 65, recording four consecutive birdies from the 13th and saving par from a bunker on the 18th to stay within striking distance.
Players are competing to secure spots among the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings, with advancement leading to next week's finale at East Lake in Atlanta for a $10 million payoff.
A "heroic effort" is required to catch Clark, McIlroy said, as the leader pursues his third victory this year heading into the final round.
