Romania says two dead after fire on ship, Ukraine blames Russian drones
Ukraine said Russian drones hit the Turkish-owned vessel, prompting a rescue operation that saved 11 crew members and left two dead.
On Monday, Romanian authorities reported a fire on the ship Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea outside Romanian territorial waters, leaving two dead. Eleven crew members were rescued, though one person remains unaccounted for.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy blamed the incident on a "horrific strike by two Russian drones" in neutral waters, while the Russian Defence Ministry stated it had struck two cargo vessels. Romania itself has not commented on the cause.
Zelenskiy wrote on social media platform X that "Azerbaijani and Indian citizens were on board," noting the civilian vessel carried corn. One of the 11 rescued crew members sustained injuries during the incident.
The Romanian Naval Authority is still establishing the fate of one unaccounted person. Romania, a NATO member sharing a 614-kilometer border with Ukraine, has not officially commented on the fire's cause.
Since the Ukraine-Russia war started four years ago, the Black Sea has seen Russian drones breaching airspace and mines floating across key trade and energy routes, complicating maritime transit in the region.
