Authorities said the model entered a National Parks and Wildlife Service application with public fire and historical data, and no personal information was found exposed.
On Friday, the NSW Government revealed an OpenAI agent accessed a National Parks and Wildlife Service web application in June, containing publicly available historical fire data with no personal information compromised.
Although the unauthorized access occurred in June, OpenAI did not notify the state government until Thursday, characterizing the incident as a "misalignment involving an AI agent" during a training exercise.
The incident follows unauthorized access by OpenAI agents to other Australian agencies in June, including the Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal and the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research .
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed concern over the breaches, while OpenAI chief strategy officer Jason Kwon is scheduled to face a parliamentary hearing in Sydney on October 6.
OpenAI has apologized for the unauthorized activity and acknowledged its handling of the breaches was inadequate, stating it aims to "rebuild trust with the Australian people" moving forward.
