Rogers must open TTC network to all carriers by October, federal government says
- Federal Industry Minister Franois-Philippe Champagne is mandating that Rogers Communications grant BCE Inc. And Telus Corp. Access to its wireless network on Toronto's subway system by October 3. The minister is also requiring all wireless carriers in Toronto to have commercial agreements in place to provide service on the Toronto Transit Commission within 100 days, and for cellular coverage to be available throughout the entire subway system within three years.
- Currently, only Rogers, Freedom Mobile, and Videotron Ltd. Customers can offer service in the subway, while all riders can make emergency 911 calls. This decision comes after a dispute between Rogers, BCE, and Telus, with Rogers claiming the current network couldn't support all carriers' traffic.
- If the carriers fail to meet the conditions set by the minister, they could face penalties or have their licenses suspended or revoked. Rogers spokesperson Sarah Schmidt welcomed the decision, while Telus and BCE expressed their satisfaction with the government's action.
