Rockies place right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano on 15-day injured list with back spasms
Sean Sullivan will start in Sugano’s place as the Rockies add Jordan Romano and lose Seth Halvorsen to the injured list.
The Colorado Rockies placed starting pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano and reliever Seth Halvorsen on the 15-day injured list Saturday, recalling left-hander Sean Sullivan and selecting two-time All-Star reliever Jordan Romano from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Back spasms forced Sugano to the list retroactive to Wednesday, while Halvorsen is sidelined with shoulder inflammation; Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said the injury to Sugano "should be very minimal."
Romano joins the bullpen after signing a minor-league deal in May, with Schaeffer noting, "He knows what he's doing out there on a big-league mound." The club is "super, super happy to have him."
The veteran reliever brings extensive experience, having appeared in 291 major league games over eight seasons for the Blue Jays, Phillies, and Los Angeles Angels with a 22-23 career record and 3.64 ERA.
Across 16 starts this season, Sugano posted an 8-4 record with a 4.80 ERA, 48 strikeouts, and a 1.32 WHIP before the injury sidelined him. His absence creates a significant gap in Colorado's rotation.
