Robot helps kids with cancer visit zoo without leaving hospital
Two immunocompromised children explored Edinburgh Zoo remotely using an AV1 robot, part of SpecialEffect's BubbleBusters project enhancing inclusion through technology.
- Two children Riley, 7, and Josy, 5, took a personalised behind-the-scenes virtual visit to Edinburgh Zoo using an AV1 remote-controlled robot from hospital or home.
- Because the children are immunocompromised, SpecialEffect's BubbleBusters project used the AV1 robot to enable remote zoo visits from hospital rooms or their homes.
- The AV1 robot has a built-in camera, speaker and microphone, operated via a secure app on tablet or phone, enabling real-time conversation and movement as children saw meerkats, penguins and giraffes.
- RZSS staff said they heard the children's laughter and excitement, while the charity highlighted inclusion and play as well as the `transformative potential of accessible technology in leisure and play`.
- This visit repurposes schooling technology for leisure, as SpecialEffect used telepresence technology to promote inclusion and accessible technology.
