Robert Hübner was Germany's best chess player for a long time. His hopes of becoming a world champion were dashed by hearing aids, a roulette ball and his nerves. But that didn't harm his passion. Now the grandmaster has died after a long illness.

The cause of death was the ongoing fight against cancer. Hubner died in a hospital in Delbrück. He was 76 years old.
