Road closures, drones, and new stadium rules for World Cup in Vancouver
Organizers will add cameras and drone surveillance, while FIFA charges $20 per item for restricted storage outside the stadium perimeter.
FIFA World Cup organizers announced the closure of Pacific Boulevard near BC Place from May 23 to late July, part of extensive tournament preparations in Vancouver.
Organizers warned of a 'significant stadium footprint' causing closures on seven match days between June 13 and July 7, limiting access near BC Place for residents and workers.
Fans attending the event must pay $20 for off-site storage, BC Place general manager Chris May announced; water bottles must be empty, transparent, soft-sided, and one litre maximum.
Taunya Geelhoed, chief operations officer for the host committee, confirmed Main Street Science World station will serve as 'the arrival hub for transit riders, taxi and ride share, pickup and drop off'; attendees will approach BC Place on foot via Pacific Boulevard.
Vancouver Police Deputy Chief Don Chapman announced that authorities will deploy drones and install additional CCTV cameras around BC Place to monitor crowd movements during the tournament.
