Riyad Mahrez Retires From the Algeria National Team After World Cup Elimination
Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football on Friday following his team's elimination from the FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32.
Switzerland outplayed Algeria 2-0 in the Round of 32 clash in Vancouver on Thursday, eliminating the team from the tournament and prompting Mahrez's decision to step away from international duty.
The 35-year-old retires with the second-most appearances for Algeria and the second-most goals , concluding an international career spanning more than a decade.
"It is the new generation's turn to play," Mahrez said, reflecting that representing Algeria had been "a great source of pride" throughout his career.
Beyond international play, the Al-Ahli forward previously won a Premier League title with Leicester City, four with Manchester City, and a Champions League title with the club.
