Rivian Recalls 35,000 EVs After Safety Probe
Rivian will inspect and replace pretensioners in 34,824 electric delivery vans after misuse damaged seat belt cables, including many in Amazon's fleet, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Rivian recalled 34,824 U.S. electric delivery vans after a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filing said seat belts may fail to restrain drivers.
- Rivian said the issue results from repeated driver misuse, with delivery drivers sitting on buckled belts that can damage the seat belt pretensioner cable and silence warnings.
- To fix the problem, Rivian will inspect and replace pretensioner assemblies if needed, pushed an over‑the‑air software update to detect misuse, and said it is not aware of any accidents.
- The recall covers 2022-2025 EDV models used by Amazon and others, with the majority of affected vans part of Amazon's delivery fleet and over 20,000 vans already handed to Amazon.
- Regulatory scrutiny and strong early sales position the EDV amid the recall as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had opened a probe into 17,198 vans, while Rivian sold 6,809 vans this year, leading Ford E-Transit and Chevrolet BrightDrop.
