Rihanna learns Kanien'kéha word to thank Air Canada flight attendant
The flight attendant said Rihanna was the first Mohawk person she had met, and the exchange sparked a wave of Indigenous pride online.
On Monday, Air Canada flight attendant Lily Kahnerahtiio Dailleboust gifted singer Rihanna a beaded lanyard during a flight from Toronto's Billy Bishop Airport to Montreal.
Informed of the VIP guest 45 minutes before boarding the Jazz aircraft, Dailleboust decided to offer her personal beaded keychain from local artisan shop Traditions.
During their interaction, Dailleboust taught Rihanna "Ni:wen," the Kanien Mohawk word for "thank you," which the singer repeated correctly; the pair shared a relaxed, "low key" conversation.
Rihanna posted a video calling the gift "something very special" that she would "never forget," sparking widespread praise from fans on social media.
Members of the Mohawk First Nation expressed pride in Dailleboust for sharing their culture, as the attendant noted the exchange meaningfully represented her community.
