- Rights group Pro Asyl sued German ministers Johann Wadephul and Alexander Dobrindt over deportations of Afghan refugees with German protected status from Pakistan to Afghanistan.
- The suit follows Pakistan’s July 31, 2025 Statutory Regulation Order ordering the repatriation of PoR card holders whose cards expired in June, amid ongoing deportations intensifying in 2025.
- Germany launched an Afghan admission programme in October 2022 which is now suspended under a new centre-right government reviewing whether stranded Afghans in Pakistan can reach Germany.
- Beginning in May 2021, Germany has taken in approximately 36,500 Afghans considered at high risk, while Pakistan has returned over 1.16 million Afghans since 2023, prompting serious concern about the humanitarian impact of sending people back to an unstable and impoverished Afghanistan.
- The deportations risk worsening Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis and endangering deportees, especially women at heightened risk of forced marriages and violence, highlighting urgent calls for rights-based refugee policies.
