Rhun ap Iorwerth said he wants a national conversation on independence and more powers for Wales after a call with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
- Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth confirmed he raised Welsh independence with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during a phone call last week, saying he wants to lead a "national conversation" on Wales' ability to function independently.
- Ap Iorwerth took office after Plaid Cymru became the largest party in the Senedd for the first time, setting out "core missions" including cutting NHS waiting lists, raising school standards, creating jobs, and tackling child poverty.
- The Welsh Government plans to phase in 20 hours of funded childcare per week for 48 weeks annually, covering children aged nine months to four, with an estimated cost of £400m once fully rolled out.
- Reform leader Dan Thomas accused the government of being "distracted by constitutional issues," while Welsh Labour leader Ken Skates challenged Ap Iorwerth to answer "awkward questions" about how policies will be funded.
- Acknowledging "we clearly face a crisis within the NHS in Wales," Ap Iorwerth promised to hold a summit delivering a roadmap for a "sustainable shift" of resources toward primary care, including GPs.
