Madison Mayor Will Not Seek Reelection, Citing Harassment, Threats
She said harassment and threats against her family and staff have risen almost every year since 2019, forcing her to end her campaign.
On Friday, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway announced she will not seek reelection, citing escalating threats of violence against her, her family, and city staff since taking office in 2019.
Rhodes-Conway stated the "price of serving has become too high" as she described a shift toward increasingly personal attacks, noting a "toxic political culture is transcending partisanship and ideology."
Tensions escalated this week when the Madison Common Council fired interim Independent Police Monitor Aeiramique Glass following a 12-hour meeting, amid ongoing criticism over the city's response to the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz.
Eight candidates have filed paperwork for the April mayoral race, while Rhodes-Conway plans to complete key projects during her remaining six months, including advancing Amtrak service to Madison.
Dane County Executive Melissa Agard expressed concern over threats driving officials from office, stating, "We must do better to ensure that public service remains something people can pursue without intimidation.
