T'gana Govt's 'Varuna Yagam' Seeking Bountiful Rains Begins at Nagarjuna Sagar in Nalgonda District
The ritual comes as Telangana faces a 5% monsoon rainfall deficit and opposition parties press the Congress government on farm distress and water shortages.
- On Monday, the Telangana government will conduct a grand Varuna Yagam at Nagarjunasagar, seeking abundant rainfall across the Krishna and Godavari river basins to ensure water security for the State.
- Halfway through the southwest monsoon, Telangana's major rivers—Krishna and Godavari—are still awaiting inflows, while uneven rainfall and El Nino concerns have left little room for complacency.
- As many as 108 Ritwiks will perform elaborate rituals around 11 Homa Kundams throughout the day, while the reservoir level stands at around 518 feet, significantly below the 590 feet Full Reservoir Level.
- Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will attend the evening "Purnahuti." BRS Working President Rama Rao argued the government should prioritize concrete relief measures for farmers alongside the ritual.
- Authorities note that Telangana's water security depends on precipitation in upstream Maharashtra and Karnataka, while an Expert Committee suggested promoting drought-tolerant crops to mitigate El Nino impacts during the current season.
