Taylor Faces 'Strategic Error' in Seizing on Migration
The Coalition says the cap would cut migration pressure on rents and house prices, and could unlock up to 400,000 new homes, Taylor will say.
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor will deliver his first budget reply speech on Thursday evening, outlining a plan to limit net overseas migration to the number of homes built in the previous year.
The policy follows the Farrer by-election last Saturday, where One Nation secured its first lower house seat, intensifying pressure on the Coalition to address voter concerns regarding "mass migration."
Implementing Taylor's policy would cut net migration by about 40 per cent this financial year, while scrapping Labor's housing funds aims to unlock up to 400,000 new homes.
Greens Senator David Shoebridge criticized the plan as "nasty politics" dictated by One Nation's popularity, while Pauline Hanson claimed her party "dragged the Coalition kicking and screaming" to adopt their policies.
YouGov director of public data Paul Smith warned copying One Nation's immigration rhetoric may prove a "strategic error," suggesting voters prefer the Coalition focus on economic management credentials.
