Hurricane Isaias Nears Gulf Coast as Residents Brace for Direct US Strike
The Category 2 storm had 105 mph winds and could dump up to 15 inches of rain, forecasters said.
Category 2 Hurricane Isaias approaches the Gulf Coast, expected to make landfall late Friday near the Alabama-Florida state line with life-threatening storm surge and winds.
Developing four months into the Atlantic hurricane season, Isaias is one day short of tying a 121-year-old record for latest-forming storms, emerging amid unusually quiet conditions caused by strong El Niño patterns.
Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey ordered non-residents to evacuate Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Dauphin Island, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced about 5,000 National Guard troops would mobilize by Friday.
Energy producers halted about 63% of Gulf oil production, removing nearly 1.3 million barrels daily from the market, while forecasters warned of potential long-duration power outages across coastal regions.
Although Isaias is expected to weaken quickly after landfall, remnants could bring heavy rainfall and flooding as far north as Tennessee and North Carolina through the weekend.
