Sea Lion with Plastic Band Wrapped Around Neck Rescued on Vancouver Island
VAMMR sedated the 617-pound animal and removed the band after weather delays, then monitored it until it recovered, officials said.
- On August 17, a Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society team successfully freed a 617-pound California sea lion entangled in a plastic packing band at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve near Metchosin.

- Head veterinarian and VAMMR executive director Martin Haulena used a dart gun to sedate the animal, as he is the only veterinarian in Canada qualified to perform this specialized procedure.
