Report: Patriots plan to release backup QB Josh Dobbs
- This offseason, the New England Patriots informed backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs they plan to release him, making him slated to become a free agent after failing to find a trade partner, NFL Network reported.
- The Patriots re-signed Tommy DeVito to a two-year, $4.4 million contract, saving $3.7 million by releasing Dobbs, who had a $4.75 million cap charge, earlier this month.
- Dobbs played sparingly last season, appearing in only four games and completing 7-of-10 passes for 65 yards after signing a two-year, $8 million contract on March 18, 2025; he has played for nine NFL teams over nine seasons.
- Adding DeVito leaves the Patriots with just Maye and DeVito in the QB room, and they will look to add a third- and fourth-string option from 16 free-agent quarterbacks or the NFL Draft in a month's time.
- DeVito's deal includes incentives that could boost its value to $7.4 million, featuring per-game roster bonuses up to $425,000 and a $75,000 workout bonus, while his career stat line shows 65.5% completion, 1,358 yards, eight TDs, and three INTs.
