Report: Microsoft's Project Helix planned for 2028 at $1,200 to $1,800 price
Fortune says the console could cost $1,200 to $1,800 unless Microsoft subsidizes hardware, while Xbox and Windows teams clash over its software.
According to a Fortune profile of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, Microsoft plans a "next-generation handheld device" for the 2027 holiday season and a next-generation home console targeting 2028.
Sharma has described Project Helix as a "family of devices," suggesting Xbox's next-generation strategy will involve multiple products rather than a single console release.
The Windows and Xbox teams are reportedly clashing over software, as Windows favors "a trimmed-down version of Windows Home" while Sharma's team wants to "build and control its own software to get the best gaming performance."
Project Helix could cost "between $1,200 and $1,800," unless Microsoft decides to subsidize the cost, which would represent a significant departure from traditional console pricing models.
CEO Sharma identified "affordability" as a key challenge for Project Helix, as rising component costs and memory supply constraints complicate development of the next-generation hardware.
