India: Modi Silent as Sonam Wangchuk Hunger Strike Continues
Journalists say Modi has held only one open press conference in 12 years, while protests and Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike go unanswered.
- On Friday, activist Sonam Wangchuk entered the 20th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET-UG irregularities.
- Following a PIL, the Delhi High Court on 16th July ordered medical monitoring of Wangchuk's condition, while over 60 prominent figures including Abhijit Banerjee and Arundhati Roy appealed to him to end his fast.
- CPI Andhra Pradesh State secretary Eswaraiah urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage with Wangchuk and dismiss Dharmendra Pradhan, claiming the NEET-UG controversy had affected nearly 23 lakh students and their families.
- The Editors Guild criticized Modi on Thursday for his "unwillingness to address unscripted press conferences," noting he has avoided such open media interactions throughout his 12 years in office.
- Wangchuk has vowed to participate in a planned Cockroach Janta Party march to Parliament on the 20th of July, coinciding with the first day of the monsoon session.
