Repaired Sahand destroyer, floating base join Iranian Navy, state media say
The Sahand destroyer was restored after sinking last year, and the Kurdistan floating base enhances Iran's naval reach with long mission support, state media said.
- On Saturday, Iran's state media said the Sahand, Iranian-built stealth destroyer, was recommissioned into the Iranian Navy, marking its return to service after earlier damage.
- Last year, Sahand capsized and sank in shallow Gulf waters while being repositioned during repairs.
- Launched in December 2018, Sahand is an Iranian-built stealth destroyer equipped with a helicopter deck, torpedo launchers, anti-aircraft and anti-ship guns, missiles and electronic-warfare systems.
- The development signals progress in Iran's domestic arms industry, which has expanded repairs and conversions under international sanctions and embargoes.
- The Kurdistan floating base was converted from a 33-year-old crude-oil tanker and fitted with a helipad for helicopters and UAVs; it can support three destroyers on long missions without docking, State TV said.
