Reminder: E-motorcycles prohibited on King County trails | King County
Deputies will warn riders first, then issue tickets as county officials cite safety risks from vehicles that can reach 50 mph.
Following a new state law, King County Parks this week launched a public awareness campaign and deployed two King County deputies to patrol trails and pull over riders of unauthorized motorized vehicles, including e-motos, mopeds, and ATVs.
E-Motos are rapidly proliferating in King County; they often look like e-bikes but are heavier, faster, and riskier, capable of reaching speeds well above 30 mph on the county's 185 miles of regional trails.
State law and King County Council legislation permit e-scooters and Class 1 and 2 e-bikes limited to 20 mph, but all motorized vehicles exceeding the 15-mph trail limit, including Class 3 e-bikes and e-motos, are prohibited.
In the short term, deputies will focus on education and warnings, said King County Parks Director Warren Jimenez, but citations will follow, with fines starting at $52 for speeds of 16 to 25 mph and $125 for faster violations.
Cascade Bicycle Club's Statewide Coalition Officer Rachel Schaeffer said "getting e-motos off trails helps keep these routes open for people of all ages and abilities," while King County Councilmember Claudia Balducci emphasized that keeping trails safe remains critical.
