Reform councillors were ‘shocked’ that they won their seats, says Farage
KENT COUNTY COUNCIL, COUNTY HALL, MAIDSTONE, JUL 7 – Reform UK secured 57 of 81 seats but faced a slow start with nearly half of June and July meetings cancelled, reflecting inexperience among new councillors, officials said.
- Reform UK won 57 out of 81 seats at Kent County Council in the local elections held on May 1, 2025, under Nigel Farage's leadership.
- The party's rise owes much to growing concerns over illegal immigration, while recent by-election losses show difficulties converting support into seats.
- Despite the election success, many committees have not met two months in, and new councillors are adjusting to their roles amid local government reorganisation debates.
- Reform leads Westminster voting intentions at 27%, ahead of Labour at 26% and Conservatives at 19%, while a YouGov poll shows 90% loyalty among its 2024 voters.
- The outcome suggests Reform UK holds widespread but shallow support that challenges its ability to translate votes into parliamentary seats under current electoral rules.
