SFA: Referee John Beaton Under Police Surveillance
The Scottish FA said the leak led to police surveillance and warned the abuse of match officials is not an isolated incident.
On Friday, the Scottish Football Association revealed that referee John Beaton and his family were placed under police surveillance after personal details were leaked online, with Police Scotland arresting a 19-year-old man in connection with the data protection offence.
During Wednesday's match at Fir Park, Beaton penalized Well midfielder Sam Nicholson for a stoppage-time handball, allowing Celtic to narrow the Premiership title gap against leaders Hearts to one point.
Blaming a "hysterical media narrative," the SFA condemned the leak as a "scourge on our national game," arguing irresponsible post-match commentary created an environment of hostility toward officials.
Evidence indicates this is not an "isolated incident," as the SFA noted many referees face harmful situations while remaining fearful of speaking out about the risks.
Strengthening rules to protect match officials is the SFA's next step, as the governing body urged "tolerance and perspective to prevent any further, unthinkable escalation.
