Reds ace Hunter Greene throws first side session after elbow surgery
Greene threw 15 to 20 pitches as he continues rehab after elbow surgery, and the Reds expect him back on the mound in 14 to 16 weeks.
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene threw 15 to 20 pitches during a side session Tuesday afternoon at the club's spring training facility in Arizona, his first time throwing from a mound since undergoing elbow surgery in mid-March.
Greene underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow on March 11, with Cincinnati expecting him to be sidelined 14 to 16 weeks before returning to the rotation by July.
Reds manager Terry Francona said it is 'really kind of cool to see him throw a side,' adding that Greene's rehabilitation has 'been really good now' and bullpen sessions mark 'a good time for them to join us.'
Greene and left-handed pitcher Brandon Williamson, on the 60-day injured list due to shoulder fatigue, will join the Reds for their six-game homestand beginning Friday before returning to Arizona to continue their rehab.
Greene's return strengthens a rotation featuring Chase Burns , Andrew Abbott , and Nick Lodolo, positioning the Reds' pitching staff to meet preseason expectations without trading significant pieces.
