He escaped captivity in WWII, later owned Nunzio’s Pizzeria: Remembering Staten Islander Albert Bruno
Albert Bruno had a harrowing experience in World War II. After enlisting at the age of 19, Bruno served in Europe as a scout, looking for the enemy. He was captured by German troops in Saint Lô, France. He and a fellow American soldier were incarcerated as prisoners of war until, nine months later, they escaped. The war ended shortly thereafter and Bruno returned to the United States.
