Reddit search traffic slumps, will push visitor sign-ins to curb AI scraping
The company said logged-out traffic fell by more than 1 million referrals a week in October and it will test the change outside the United States.
On Thursday, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced the platform will transition to a logged-in-only experience, ending two decades of allowing users to browse without creating an account.
Huffman attributed the shift to protecting Reddit's data from AI scraping and declining search traffic, which dropped by more than 1 million referrals weekly during October.
Logged-In users drive over 80% of Reddit's monetization, and the shift will improve ad targeting while helping the company adapt to emerging global regulations.
Reddit will test the requirement in select markets outside the U.S. during the fourth quarter, while rebuilding its app-based incognito mode to preserve browsing anonymity.
Shares fell more than 9% in extended trading as the AI-centered web shift has reduced click-throughs for publishers industry-wide, highlighting broader challenges beyond Reddit.
