Red Sox RHP Liam Hendriks (elbow) placed on IL to open season
- Three-Time All-Star Liam Hendriks, 36, was placed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation before the Boston Red Sox's season opener against the Texas Rangers on Thursday, delaying his debut with the team.
- Hendriks, who signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Red Sox in February 2024 that includes a mutual option for 2026, was previously rehabbing from Tommy John surgery performed by Dr. Keith Meister in August 2023 after missing the start of the 2023 season while undergoing treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
- Red Sox manager Alex Cora stated that Hendriks' last bullpen session during spring training was not good, and he would be visiting Dr. Keith Meister, the Rangers' team physician, for further evaluation.
- Before his elbow injury, Hendriks made five minor league rehab appearances from Aug. 18 through Sept. 5 with a 1.80 ERA and was working to pitch for the Red Sox late last season, but felt tightness in his forearm.
- The Red Sox made several roster moves to finalize their 26-man roster, including placing Chris Murphy, Zach Penrod, Lucas Giolito, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford on the injured list, while Cooper Criswell was named to the Opening Day roster.
