Recreation helps Lewiston find a way forward three years after mass shooting
Recreation and community events have helped survivors and residents return to public life as the Maine Resiliency Center adds support and shared activities.
Three years after the October 25, 2023, mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, survivors and community members are gathering through recreation to foster healing and reconnect.
On October 25, 2023, a gunman opened fire at Just-In-Time Recreation and Schemengees Bar and Grille, killing 18 people across the two Lewiston locations.
The Maine Resiliency Center opened 19 days after the tragedy, organizing game nights and potlucks that serve as impromptu support groups, director Danielle Parent said.
Owner Justin Juray welcomed the community back to his bowling alley six months after the shooting, with returning visitors practicing their reconnection to public spaces.
Recovery remains ongoing as survivors navigate emotional impact; Parent stated, "It's something that the people learn to build a life around," emphasizing resilience as a continuous process.
