RCMP Says No Evidence Links India to Nijjar Killing
Canadian and U.S. investigators say the case is tied to organized crime, while 37 defendants face charges in a wider transnational probe.
The US Justice Department announced arrests of 24 defendants tied to India-based crime groups involved in violent crimes and drug trafficking across the US, Canada, and Europe, including charges related to the 2023 assassination of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Canadian authorities found no evidence linking the Indian government to Nijjar's assassination despite the involvement of Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar in the murder.
The assassination caused significant diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, although relations have since improved under Prime Minister Mark Carney with efforts to enhance trade.
Some Sikh groups remain critical of Canada for not holding India accountable or protecting Sikh Canadians from foreign interference.
World Report highlights U.S. charges tying the Bishnoi network to Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing while noting Canada says there’s no evidence implicating the Indian government
