Rape and Murder of 11-Year-Old Sparks Unrest in West Bengal
Police said the suspect was killed during a crime scene reconstruction after allegedly trying to flee and firing at officers.
On Sunday, the body of an 11-year-old girl was recovered from a pond in Surjyapur village, Baruipur, a day after her family reported her missing on Saturday afternoon.
Relatives claimed police ignored their initial pleas for help, stating, "Had the police acted earlier, she could have been saved." Suspect Prabhash Mondal was killed in a "police encounter" less than 24 hours after arrest.
Angered by the death, mobs vandalized roads, shops, and a local railway station, prompting police to register three cases and detain 40 people. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met the victim's family to assure them of justice.
Opposition parties accused the newly-elected Bharatiya Janata Party of failing to protect women, while local BJP leader Sushant Mondal denied allegations, claiming he "helped catch the perpetrators."
Ranjit Sur of the Association for the Protection of Democratic Rights called the suspect's killing "suspicious," arguing that similar police encounter narratives in other states follow an identical pattern of escape attempts.
